Learn Japanese Fast Update 1: I learned Hiragana!!

by Mitchell on February 4, 2012

Ok, So it’s been slightly more than two weeks since my “Learn Japanese Fast” (3 months) challenge started but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been busy.

Due to some awesome suggestions from readers I decided to master Hiragana first and I am proud to report that I’ve been able to do it!

Here’s the exact process I followed to master Hiragana in two weeks (well just over).
Overall I probably only spent between 5 and 10 hours working on learning this. The rest of my time was spent memorizing words from my 100 Japanese words to memorize list and slacking off.

Learning Hiragana

Step 1: Went through Human Japanese lessons for the first half of Hiragana.
The lesson gave me a bit of history of the writing system and showed me the stroke order for the different characters.
There were also a few mini quizzes and opportunities to practice. I wrote each character out in my notebook and repeated
it until I felt semi-comfortable writing it. At the end of the first half, there was a matching game type activity which I repeated a few times.

Step 2: Practice with online flash cards. I used these ones to help with my Hiragana memorization. I hid the ones I hadn’t learned yet and practiced with the first half until I was 200% sure I knew them all.

Step 3: Well, that’s it. After I had mastered the first half. I went back and repeated steps 1 and 2 for the second half. This system worked well for me and all in all I probably spent about 10 hours getting Hiragana down.

So, what does my newfound mastery of Hiragana allow me to do?
Well, I can proudly read bits and pieces of signs, menus, and all the text that keeps popping up on t.v. I’m hoping I’ll be able to build on this and am planning on reading some children’s stories soon that contain only Hiragana which will help me with learning some new words.

So, I’ve got just over two months left in my challenge so it’s time to get busy!

My goals for the next two weeks:

-Finish mastering the 100 words
-read at least one childrens story in Hiragana
-order food from a restaurant that has a menu with no pictures
-fully investigate the resources suggested by readers in my first post and compile the resources into an easier to read/follow format.

Thanks for following along! I’ll try get the next update out sooner than this one.
If you’re joining me on this challenge and want to report on your progress then please feel free to do so in the comments section :) Even if you aren’t joining me, say hi and offer me some encouragement or words of wisdom.

cheers,
Mitchell
